The coat that's gorgeous
when you stay ahead of it.
Doodles are some of the most beautiful dogs in Allen. They're also some of the most commonly matted. Here's everything you need to know to keep yours fluffy — not shaved flat.

the same doodle.
This is the thing most doodle PAWrents don't know when they bring home their puppy: the generation of your doodle largely determines what kind of coat they have — and how much work that coat actually requires. A wavy F1 Goldendoodle and a tight-curl F1b Goldendoodle look similar in photos but have very different grooming needs.
| Generation | Coat Type | Grooming Frequency | At-Home Brushing |
|---|---|---|---|
| F1 (50/50) | Wavy to light curl | Every 8 weeks | 3× per week |
| F1b (75% Poodle) | Wavy to tight curl | Every 6–7 weeks | Every 2–3 days |
| F2 / F2b | Highly variable | Every 6–8 weeks | Every 2–3 days |
| Multigenerational | Consistent tight curl | Every 6 weeks | Daily |
The curly coat that makes doodles so appealing — the teddy bear look, the low-shedding quality — is also the coat that mats fastest. Curls trap loose fur instead of shedding it, and that loose fur tangles with the live coat if it isn't brushed out regularly. The tighter the curl, the faster this happens.
Surface brushing — where the brush glides over the top of the coat without reaching the skin — looks fine and feels fine, but leaves the undercoat completely unaddressed. Mats form at the skin level, not the surface. A dog can look perfectly fluffy and have severe matting underneath. Use a metal comb after brushing: if it doesn't reach the skin without resistance, there are mats you haven't found yet.
Why doodles get shaved
— and how to avoid it.
We see shave-downs every week at Bark & Purr, and almost every one of them was preventable. Here's the honest truth about how mats happen and what to do instead.
Week 1–2: Normal. Coat looks great. Week 3–4: Loose fur starts accumulating. Week 5–6: Without brushing, tangles begin forming at the skin. Week 7–8: Mats are tight and widespread. By the time you see it on the surface, there's usually significant mat damage underneath. This is why the 6-to-8-week schedule isn't just aesthetic — it's structural coat health.
What to do at home
When a dog arrives with significant matting, we assess before we begin. If dematting is possible without causing pain or skin trauma, we'll work through it. If it isn't — if the mats are too tight or too close to the skin — we'll always choose the option that's safest and most comfortable for the dog. We'll tell you exactly what we found and why we made the call we made.
What cut should your
doodle actually get?
The right cut depends on your dog's coat, your lifestyle, and your home brushing commitment. Here's a plain-language breakdown of the most common options:
