The coat that's gorgeous
when you stay ahead of it.

Doodles are some of the most beautiful dogs in Allen. They're also some of the most commonly matted. Here's everything you need to know to keep yours fluffy — not shaved flat.

Not all doodles are
the same doodle.

This is the thing most doodle PAWrents don't know when they bring home their puppy: the generation of your doodle largely determines what kind of coat they have — and how much work that coat actually requires. A wavy F1 Goldendoodle and a tight-curl F1b Goldendoodle look similar in photos but have very different grooming needs.

Generation Coat Type Grooming Frequency At-Home Brushing
F1 (50/50) Wavy to light curl Every 8 weeks 3× per week
F1b (75% Poodle) Wavy to tight curl Every 6–7 weeks Every 2–3 days
F2 / F2b Highly variable Every 6–8 weeks Every 2–3 days
Multigenerational Consistent tight curl Every 6 weeks Daily

The curly coat that makes doodles so appealing — the teddy bear look, the low-shedding quality — is also the coat that mats fastest. Curls trap loose fur instead of shedding it, and that loose fur tangles with the live coat if it isn't brushed out regularly. The tighter the curl, the faster this happens.

⚠️ The #1 doodle grooming mistake

Surface brushing — where the brush glides over the top of the coat without reaching the skin — looks fine and feels fine, but leaves the undercoat completely unaddressed. Mats form at the skin level, not the surface. A dog can look perfectly fluffy and have severe matting underneath. Use a metal comb after brushing: if it doesn't reach the skin without resistance, there are mats you haven't found yet.

matting & prevention

Why doodles get shaved
— and how to avoid it.

We see shave-downs every week at Bark & Purr, and almost every one of them was preventable. Here's the honest truth about how mats happen and what to do instead.

✦ The mat timeline

Week 1–2: Normal. Coat looks great. Week 3–4: Loose fur starts accumulating. Week 5–6: Without brushing, tangles begin forming at the skin. Week 7–8: Mats are tight and widespread. By the time you see it on the surface, there's usually significant mat damage underneath. This is why the 6-to-8-week schedule isn't just aesthetic — it's structural coat health.

What to do at home

🪮
Right tools matter
A slicker brush + metal comb. The slicker loosens. The comb confirms you've reached the skin. Skip the paddle brush — it doesn't get there.
📍
Check the hot spots
Behind ears, armpits, groin, collar line, around the eyes. These mat first, every time. Check them even when you skip a full brush session.
💧
Never wet a matted coat
Water tightens mats. If your dog swam or got rained on, brush before it dries completely — not after.
📅
Keep appointments
Skipping one appointment and coming back at 12–14 weeks instead of 6–8 almost always results in a shave-down. The coat doesn't pause when the calendar does.

When a dog arrives with significant matting, we assess before we begin. If dematting is possible without causing pain or skin trauma, we'll work through it. If it isn't — if the mats are too tight or too close to the skin — we'll always choose the option that's safest and most comfortable for the dog. We'll tell you exactly what we found and why we made the call we made.

popular cuts

What cut should your
doodle actually get?

The right cut depends on your dog's coat, your lifestyle, and your home brushing commitment. Here's a plain-language breakdown of the most common options:

🧸
Teddy Bear Cut
Body 1.5–2" long, rounded face, full legs. The classic doodle look. Requires consistent grooming every 6–8 weeks and at-home brushing 3× per week minimum.
✂️
Puppy Cut
Uniform length all over, typically 1–1.5". Easier to maintain. Less dramatic, still adorable. Better choice for busy PAWrents or dogs with active outdoor lifestyles.
🌟
Kennel / Summer Cut
Short all over (½–1"). Maximum comfort for North Texas summers. Easiest to maintain. Works especially well for dogs who swim or spend time outdoors frequently.

common questions

Goldendoodle grooming FAQ

How often does a Goldendoodle need professional grooming?
Goldendoodles typically need professional grooming every 6 to 8 weeks. Curly-coated doodles (usually F1b and later generations) mat faster and need appointments closer to every 6 weeks. Wavy F1 coats can often stretch to 8 weeks with consistent at-home brushing every 2 to 3 days.
Why does my doodle always get shaved down?
Most doodle shave-downs happen because of matting that developed between appointments or without enough at-home brushing. When a coat is too matted to brush out humanely, shaving is the only safe option. The solution is regular grooming appointments every 6 to 8 weeks and brushing at home every 2 to 3 days with a slicker brush that reaches the skin — not just the surface.
What is a teddy bear cut for a Goldendoodle?
A teddy bear cut leaves the body longer (typically 1.5 to 2 inches) with a rounded face shape and fuller legs — giving the classic fluffy doodle look. Keeping this cut requires more frequent grooming every 6 to 8 weeks and regular brushing at home to prevent matting in the longer coat.
My Goldendoodle is matted. What happens at the appointment?
We assess the matting when your dog arrives. Light matting can often be worked through during the groom. Moderate to severe matting — where mats are close to the skin or cover large areas — requires dematting or shave-down depending on what's humane and safe. We always choose the option that's best for your dog and will tell you exactly what we found.
